Admissions

Transfer students represent a very important part of the Human Ecology community. Roughly one third of the college's students began their college experience at other academic institutions- transferring from 2- and 4- year colleges, and from sister colleges at Cornell.

Why the College of Human Ecology?

While admissions requirements are stringent, Cornell's College of Human Ecology is a wonderful place for many students to complete their undergraduate degrees. We understand some of the concerns transfers might have as they consider Cornell University and the challenges they might face as they adjust to Cornell and have tried to address them in the following ways.

  • Academic courses generally transfer easily
  • Need-based financial aid
  • Variety of majors prepare students for a wide range of careers
  • Multiple levels of academic support, ranging from faculty advisors and department representatives, to student services resource people to peer advisors and mentors are available.
  • Strong support network of admissions counselors to assist transfers throughout the inquiry, the application, and the matriculation processes.

We encourage all potential transfer applicants to consult with one of several Human Ecology transfer admissions counselors to discuss the college's programs more completely, review admissions requirements, and talk about how academic credits transfer, as well as Cornell and Human Ecology major requirements.

Email Human Ecology's Admissions Office or call (607)255-5471 to arrange an appointment.

Transfer Selection Factors

While admission is competitive and selective, CHE is committed to building a diverse and stimulating learning environment.

Your performance in college-level courses is extremely important and plays a critical role in the admissions committee review of your application, however, it is not the sole determinant. We want to know who you are and what makes you tick – what are your passions, abilities and unique qualities? Applicants' life experiences and demonstrated interest in academic programs to which they are applying are also compelling factors.

Competitive transfer applicants have earned GPA of B+ (3.3) or higher and have pursued a curriculum parallel to that of current Human Ecology students (PDF). The Admissions Committee pays particular attention to courses in English, Math, and Science and courses related to the area students wish to pursue at Human Ecology. Be sure to closely review our Required Preparatory Coursework (PDF) information.

The Admissions Committee also closely considers the work, volunteer, and learning experiences transfer applicants have had, as well as a demonstrated deep interest in Human Ecology programs. Strong writing skills, as shown in application essays, are another critical part of the application review process.

Those interested in Apparel Design and Apparel and Textile Management are required to submit a portfolio and an Apparel Design and Management index.

Once a transfer applicant is accepted, credit transfer information will be sent.
